Local Business Spotlight
August 2004

by Amy Ujazdowski

When owner, Beverly Hook, decided to open a café, she made sure to accommodate a customer’s every thirst. Her pledge came true in April 2004 when she nestled the Sip and Surf into its home at the DuBois Mall.

Based on an Italian espresso bar, Beverly traveled the United States to find the “Best of the Best.” The café menu reflects her hard work, including coffees, teas, desserts, and meals a patron can’t find anywhere else in the area. Some signature drinks include the Creamcicle (a smoothie-like beverage using fresh oranges), Carmel Macchiato (traditional Italian drink), and Tia Tea.

Also, if you’re hungry, Sip and Surf can fill you up. For a customer looking to treat that sweet tooth, a variety of gourmet desserts are always on hand. British desserts, called scones, are very popular and are described as a cross between a muffin and a biscuit.

If you are still hungry, Sip and Surf offers an array of sandwiches and wraps. Sandella Wraps are made fresh and quick, but a Daini Sandwich takes a little more time. As a new item offered, the Daini Sandwich is an Italian grilled sandwich with a ton of cheese and it’s placed on flat bread, called Foccacia.

In addition, Sip and Surf offers too many other sandwiches to name them all, but check out the weekly specials and other menu items. Your taste buds will be begging for more.

So, what makes the “Surf” in the Sip and Surf? Well, when you are SIPPING on some delicious traditional or non-traditional blend, you can SURF the internet on one of three computers. No slow access here, and when a customer’s purchase is $2.00 or more, he or she receives 15 free minutes on the net. Each additional 15 minutes is $1.50.

Some things to look for in the future are custom-made gift baskets and employee gifts during the holiday season. Plus, if a family member or friend lives too far away, Beverly will send it out.

Upon high demand, teapots may be on the shelves, too, but some things already available to purchase are mugs, hand-made soaps and candles, and a brand of teas call, Republic of Tea.

If you have any questions or would like to order take-out, call (814)371-9600, or stop by Sip and Surf during operation hours:

  • Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
